Your Assignment

1. Choose any author in Diyanni's Literature.

  • Consider your choice carefully as you will spend a considerable amount of time studying the author and his or her work.

2. Assemble a bibliography. This is a list of books, articles, or otherwise that you have compiled to begin your research.

  • Your bibliography will look like a work-cited page, including the title, author, date of publication, etc.
  • You must include some of your author's principle works, literary crticism, and biographical information.
  • Some of your bibliography must include actual books.
  • The amout of information available will vary from author to author, but a successful bibliography usually includes four to five hundred pages of information.  This means you will collect more information than you will have time to read.

3. Read and take notes from researched resources providing biographical information and literary criticism of your chosen author.

  • Your notes must be organized in the manner outlined in class. 
  • Read in a discerning fashion.  The quality of literary criticism and biographies vary greatly. If the book is poorly written, stop reading.
  • Follow your interest.  You will eventually narrow the scope of your research to a specific subject so make sure it is on you find interesting.
  • Your notes are due during your conferences and will be graded.
  • An "A" student usually produces twenty or more pages of notes.
  • Organize your notes; then begin to consider what you want to write about.
  • A student usually only uses around 20% of their "stuff" - just the "good stuff".
  • In conferences your tenative thesis can be discussed.

4. Write your paper.

  • Your first paragraph will be due separately.  At this point you should be done "thinking" about your paper. You have all of your supporting evidence and the observations or assertions that resulted. You will have created a revised thesis and matched it with a situation and complication.
  • As a class, each first paragraph will be criticized in an attempt to improve it. To take full advantage of these edits, submit the best first paragraph you are capable of writing and it can only improve.
  • A first draft will be due separately.
  • The final paper will be due separately.
  • A paper less than 2000 words earns an "F" grade.
  • Anyone wanting their papers returned should provide a self addressed, stamped envelope.
