The Research Process

This guide is designed to help you locate resources about Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest.

This is the handout from class.  Use this handout to 

  • take notes for your paper
  • remember which sources you've used
  • record info for MLA citations

The Native American Tribe Report Assignment

Select one particular Native American tribe living in the Pacific Northwest.  Write a report on the pre-contact cultural aspects of that particular tribe.  See a list of tribes under the "Selecting a Tribe" tab of this guide (or on your assignment sheet) for ideas.

Include the following information in your report:

  • Location
  • Cultural Group (Coastal, Plateau, etc.)
  • Food 
  • Transportation
  • Art
  • Tools and Implements
  • Major Language Group
  • Clothing
  • Types of Shelter
  • Ceremonies
  • One Legend

    Possible alternatives to some of the above are:  mythology/religion, women's roles, men's roles, etc. Ask your instructor....


    Types of Resources

    You will need to include 5 sources.  Anything from the Internet (excluding online library resources) will count as one source.   

    These are all considered different types of resources (either online or print):

    circulating books

    reference books

    newspaper articles

    popular magazine articles

    scholarly/academic articles

    trade journal articles

    personal interviews

    Web sites/pages/blogs (may be scholarly or popular in nature)

    Film/DVD/streaming or online film or film clip (e.g., section from library's Films on Demand)

    audio clip

    diaries, letters, posters, reports and other primary sources

    and more!
